ABSTRACT:
A Repertory is an index to the Homoeopathic Materia Medica (HMM), representing symptoms through rubrics. It is an important tool for expanding our knowledge of the HMM; simply put, the repertory acts as a bridge between the HMM and the patient. This paper attempts to study the emotion of sadness: its various shades, their representation in the Synthesis 9.1 Repertory, and various emerging remedies from the HMM that would help us not only in prescribing, but also in case-taking.
KEYWORDS: Sadness, Synthesis 9.1, Rubrics, Mind Section, Repertory, Materia Medica
INTRODUCTION:
In this study, sadness as an emotion has been studied: its exact meaning, important rubrics, and remedies are noted. This study helps us to identify and differentiate synonymous rubrics, so that we can choose the correct rubric while solving a case. Each remedy, represented against the corresponding rubric, is suffixed with author references. A list of these abbreviations is attached at the end, to verify the authenticity of each remedy represented. This documentation can serve as a model to study different emotions and their shades, e.g., irritability, anxiety, sentimentality, fear.
METHODOLOGY:
- The study began with a thorough reading of the Mind section of the Synthesis 9.1 Repertory, noting down various specific and closely connected rubrics related to sadness.
- Cross-references of rubrics related to sadness were also cited and important rubrics were identified.
- General rubrics having a large number of remedies were eliminated.
- The Merriam Webster Dictionary (2019) was used to extract English meanings of these rubrics.
- The ICR Operational Manual was referred to further refine the meanings related to Homoeopathic aspects.
- Remedies listed in the rubrics were re-referred for authentic sources.
- The remedies mentioned in unauthenticated or unrecognized sources were not considered and hence eliminated from the final compilation. A few examples:
- Sadness, day and night, weeping; with:
This rubric on page no 205 cited remedy Caust without a reference, hence it has been omitted.
- Sadness, obesity; with: gink-bsbd1
This rubric on page no 209; has an author reference by name: SWOBODA Franz von, about whom we do not know much.
- Grief, silent, love; from disappointment: Aur-m-n, Ign, Nat-m, Nat-sil, ac, Phos.
This rubric on page no 136; is considered under “Disappointment rubrics” but two remedies are omitted due to its relatively lesser known sources; viz: Aur-m-nwbt2– WULFSBERG Terje; nat-silfd3.de– FRIEDRICH Peter und Edeltraud; again, much is not known about these two authors.
- Further different shades of sadness were considered from the Standardized Case Record© (SCR) Emotional state (page no: 31).
- The whole literary work was done manually using the SCR, ICR Operational Manual, Merriam Webster Dictionary, and Synthesis 9.1.
- Synthesis 9.0 (As Synthesis 9.1 is not available in the software format) from RADAR 10.5 software was used to repertorize all the rubrics that were used for this study to derive the prominent remedies coming up for the emotion of sadness.
- The gradation of the remedies used in this study is as per the Synthesis repertory.

SOME IMPORTANT INSIGHTS THROUGH THE STUDY
In the study, 12 shades of Sadness were identified, of which 59 sub-rubrics were studied. Sadness and its synonymous word meanings helped us to understand the finer differentiation between these rubrics.
Frequently appearing remedies in different shades of sadness and in higher intensity were Aurum met, Aurum Mur, Ignatia, Nat Mur, Phos acid, Naja, Ars alb, Nitric acid, Lachesis, Causticum, Staphysagria, Phosphorus, and Nat sulph.

CONCLUSION:
- The study of the dictionary meanings of various shades of sadness in the repertory helps us in the actual understanding of the specific shade and its application.
- As we know, “A case well-taken is half-cured!” The study of the Repertory helps us to expand our horizons regarding the qualitative shades of various symptoms available in the repertory, which will be reflected in a better case taking.
- Such knowledge would also be extremely useful to the Homoeopathic physician in the finer differentiation of Materia Medica at the bed-side.
- It would help the physician to select rubrics for a case more precisely for individualization and arriving at the similimum, not remaining at a general level where chances of missing the similimum are higher due to over generalization.
- Similar study of shades of other emotions will help us evolve as better prescribers.
