I like rain.
I hear rich leaves on top
Giving the poor leaves below…. drop after drop.
Its a lovely sound to hear …. these green leaves drinking near.

The lush fields, the land covered in green everywhere, rain dripping from leaf to leaf … W. H. Davies creates this lovely image for us in his poem ‘The Rain’. As torrential rains mellow down to a drizzle, Shraavan starts sending sparks of excitement in our hearts. This Shraavan month is exceptionally remarkable, especially in Palghar and the surrounding tribal areas! Our tribal brothers and sisters work hard in the fields during the day, relieving their fatigue in the night through traditional folk songs, trumpet tunes, and dancing footsteps. As the rice saplings dance happily enjoying the rains and the sunshine, every household is filled with the aroma of piping hot chulha bhakris and monsoon vegetables from the jungle. They have discovered and preserved the numerous vegetables, tubers, fruits, flowers with medicinal properties which spring up in the surrounding forests during monsoons. Folk dances from this region such as Tarpa, Dhol and Gauri are considered as folk dances of Maharashtra today. Warli art, celebrating the whole life cycle of tribals, originated here and is now recognized the whole world over.
Located just 80 km from Mumbai, this rich piece of nature has remained quite distant from the urban landscape. The lifestyle here is different, the food is different, the language is different … and the problems, too, are different.
Dr. M.L. Dhawale Memorial Trust, working to provide healthcare in this area for the last 32 years, has organized a One-Day Forest Festival for us to experience this culture and to take a closer look at tribal life.
We bring to you a banquet consisting of an exquisite meal of the forest vegetables and bhakri-s, along with organic farming information and demonstrations, Warli art samples, folk music and folk dance festivals.
