“TO UNDERSTAND SUSCEPTIBILITY AND REMEDY REACTION WITH FOCUSING ON ADVANTAGES AND LIMITATIONS OF VARIOUS POTENCY SCALES IN HOMOEOPATHIC PRESCRIBING”

INTRODUCTION

Hahnemann in Organon of Medicine states the inter relationship between the potency, the repetition of dose and susceptibility which a homoeopathic physician must know to become a good prescriber. Roberts suggests that the potency should not be readily changed as long as it helps the patient; otherwise, a needless aggravation may be precipitated. Kent, however, is of the view that the same potency should to be repeated more than twice .Dr. M. L. Dhawale states susceptibility to the subsequent administration of the same potency tends to fall gradually and this is reflected in the progressively decreasing response as evidenced by shorter remission. This can be offset by changing the potency. Close ,Guernsey- have emphasized that physician needs to be open to use all the available scales without prejudice by understanding individual susceptibility of each case for selection of appropriate potency and repetition

  • But do we have criteria to select potency scale?
  • How many times do we think consciously to select the right potency scale for our patients?
  • We do know some indication/s of each scale [Decimal, CH, and LM & Q] but more often than not it is on our ‘assumptions’.

The LM scale has not been very popular among homoeopaths in comparison to decimal & centesimal, primarily due to historical reasons. It now seems to be coming into greater use as modern homoeopaths are experimenting with it more and more.

Hahnemann himself, in his later years, was experimenting with a schedule in which every subsequent dose was of a slightly higher dynamization and he expresses himself in favor of this innovation. But subsequent prescribers have not much to record on this interesting aspect of Posology.

Susceptibility is made known to us through the Signs and symptoms which represent the only perceptible from of evidence which signifies to us the reaction that takes place within the organism. From this it will be obvious that much of our knowledge of this vital aspect is purely inferential and not direct. As such, everything turns on the validity of our inferences and interpretations which determine our therapeutic measures.

  • So –What constitutes a dose?
  • How can we know the degree of the special susceptibility to the action of the drug before its administration?

However, it has been a long road to the use of the minimum dose, and many animosities have developed, all because of dose.
Hahnemann in each edition of Organon has progressed one step further in the development of the minuteness of the dose. In the preface of 5th edition of Organon of Medicine, Master stated that Homoeopathy was “so near to perfection” but about the sixth edition he wrote to his publisher that in comparisons with previous ones it was “the most nearly perfect of all”.

In reply to a query made by Dr. Breyfogle of USA to Madam Hahnemann, regarding Hahnemann’s views on potencies – she replied : Hahnemann used all degrees of dilutions low as well as high as the individual case required. I saw him gave the third trituration, but I also know that he used the 200th or even 1000th potency when he considered it necessary”. Surprisingly, she did not mention specifically about the LM potency!

Our experiences with new method of selection of medicines are bringing various questions in our mind. In this symposium it is our humble effort to focus on various potency scales to derive some guideline about its usage and interpretation of remedy reaction through the cases from the practice.

Our experiences with Decimal scales and Mother Tincture are case based. Can we try to analyze and understand susceptibility/remedy reaction/posology in cases treated with above scales? Our openness to learn will gives us insight for using medicines in Decimal scale and Physiological doses.

What is necessary to be an effective prescriber? It is essential to have basic knowledge’s of disease, its cause, pathogenesis, knowledge of understanding symptomatology, analysis and evaluation of susceptibility quantitatively and miasmatic, curative action of remedial forces and their interrelationships.

Only then a homoeopathic physician is able to find answers by applying these he will be in a position to make a rational selection of potency ,dose and Second Prescription.

This reflects the depth and width required to fathom the understanding of the subject of susceptibility and selection of various scales of available potencies. One needs to introspect and retrospect. We learn from our mistakes and failures more than our successes. Our Experience should become asset and not liability.

Learning by Doing .Action Learning, Learning by Sharing
Let us experience it by sharing our experiences and doing on others experiences.
You all are welcomed to participate in this symposium actively.
You can send your case which can reflect / demonstrate the topic effectively. Cases with Follow ups will deliver the ACTION LEARNING which all can take home.
